Mrs Sim’s Weekly Update – Term 2 Week 2

Dear Parents,

I hope you have all had a lovely week and are keeping well. It has been another very busy and productive week in Year 1/2, with lots of exciting learning taking place.

Mathematics

In Maths, we have continued our learning about money. The children have been choosing notes and coins, making the same amounts, comparing different amounts of money and beginning to calculate with money. We explored this through practical, hands-on activities such as tuff trays, using toy money and creating a toy shop. The children loved working out how much change Mrs Sim should get – even if I did end up giving £28 change from 50p by mistake! 😂 We will continue to practise calculations with money next week to build confidence and accuracy.

Maths Learning Objectives

Objective CodeLearning Objective
Spr.1.4Choose the correct notes and coins to make given amounts
Spr.1.5Make the same amount using different combinations of coins
Spr.1.6Compare different amounts of money
Spr.1.7Begin to calculate with money, including finding change

Literacy

In Literacy, we have been working with our class texts The Dragon Machine and The Dragon Sitter. The children designed a large dragon template where they wrote adjectives about the dragon’s personality inside the dragon and described its appearance and the havoc it causes on the outside. They then used this plan to write their own dragon descriptions, and they did a fantastic job using exciting vocabulary and full sentences.

IPC – Science

IPC has been a very fun-filled week of learning with lots of exciting hands-on investigations. We explored how to stop ice from melting by testing different materials such as bubble wrap, foil, newspaper and fabric. The children worked in groups to plan a fair test, wrapped ice cubes, measured the melted water every five minutes and compared results. They learned that materials like microfibre and bubble wrap work best because they trap air and act as insulators, helping to keep things cold. The children enjoyed sharing results, sorting materials and discussing why some worked better than others.

IPC – Food & Ice Investigation

We also explored how ice can be useful and discovered how it can be turned into something healthy to eat. The children learned that food gives us energy and discussed what makes a healthy diet. We talked about where sweetness and vitamins come from and decided that fruit was the best choice. The children loved tasting ice lollies, guessing flavours and then creating their own fruit-based ice treats. This was a fantastic way to explore solids and liquids, changes in materials and healthy eating and the children absolutely loved all the hands-on learning!

It has been a pleasure to see the children so engaged and enthusiastic in their learning this week. Have a lovely weekend and I look forward to another fun-filled week ahead.

Take care,

Mrs Sim
