Mr Dunn’s Class Update Term 2 Week 9

Hello everyone!

Don’t forget our trip to UNIST and the CRESTAR science program will be on Friday, it should be a great day. We’ve had another fun and productive week, here are some highlights from this week’s learning.

In English, students completed and practised their Travel Agent presentations before confidently presenting their holiday proposals to the class. They then evaluated different travel plans, reflecting on how effectively each one met the client brief and identifying ways their own work could be improved. Following this, students applied their understanding of travel experiences in a different context by writing a formal complaint letter about a holiday that did not meet expectations, focusing on clear explanation, evidence and appropriate tone.

IMYC

In science, students carried out an investigation to find out which materials work best as insulators. Ice cubes were placed in containers wrapped with different materials, such as foil, fabric, and paper. Over time, students observed how much the ice melted. By comparing the results, they identified which materials slowed down the transfer of thermal energy the most and therefore kept the ice frozen for longer.

In History this week, students explored different leadership approaches within the Civil Rights Movement by comparing the ideas of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. Working in pairs, students became “experts” on one leader before teaching their partner about their beliefs and strategies for achieving change. They discussed the different types of risks involved in each approach and evaluated how these strategies aimed to challenge segregation and promote equality.

Maths

Year 7

This week we continued our work on addition and subtraction of fractions. We studied:

  • Spr.5.2 – Convert between mixed numbers and fractions
  • Spr.5.3 – Add and subtract unit fractions with the same denominator
  • Spr.5.4 – Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator
  • Spr.5.5 – Add and subtract fractions from integers expressing the answer as a single fraction
  • Spr.5.6 – Understand and use equivalent fractions

Our next end-of-term assessment is currently scheduled for Wednesday 18 March and Thursday 19th March. This will cover all the material studied in the spring term.

Year 8
Number Sense

Spr.6.9 – Convert metric units of area (H)
Spr.6.10 – Convert metric units of volume (H)
Spr.6.11 – Solve problems involving time and the calendar

Students completed an assessment and performed well. A mock question paper has been provided for practice.
On Monday, students will have an end-of-term assessment, so they are encouraged to prepare well.
Year 9

Pythagoras’ Theorem

  • Spr.6.2: Identify the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle.
  • Spr.6.3: Determine whether a triangle is right-angled using side lengths.
  • Spr.6.4: Calculate the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle using Pythagoras’ theorem.
  • Spr.6.5: Calculate missing sides in right-angled triangles.

Students learned how to apply Pythagoras’ theorem to find unknown sides and to check if a triangle is right-angled.
