Hello everyone!
We had a very busy and productive week as we came to the end of our IMYC unit and started a new unit in English. Here are some highlights from this week’s learning.
In English, students have been exploring how writers create engaging short stories through character, narration and atmosphere. Using extracts from modern fiction such as The Hunger Games and Percy Jackson, students analysed how authors introduce memorable narrators, build tension and create mood through descriptive writing. They then applied these techniques in their own creative writing by developing original characters, story openings and atmospheric settings.
In History, students explored how different individuals and groups worked together to help end the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Through group investigations, students researched key abolitionists, campaign groups, and methods used to challenge slavery, including petitions, speeches, boycotts, and published narratives. They examined how collaboration, public pressure, and changing attitudes contributed to abolition and evaluated which factors may have had the greatest impact
This week in Geography, students explored how changing relationships between countries and communities can affect trade, travel, and everyday life. Using a range of real-world case studies, including borders, global trade routes, and international cooperation, they investigated both the benefits and challenges that can occur when collaboration changes. Students considered how people, businesses, and communities are impacted by these changes, helping them develop a deeper understanding of global connections and interdependence.
In Science, students explored the Earth’s movement in space and how this affects everyday life on Earth. They investigated how the Earth’s rotation causes day and night, how the Earth’s tilt creates the seasons, and how the Moon orbits the Earth and goes through different phases. Students also learned about orbits and gravity, exploring how planets, moons, and satellites move through space and how artificial satellites are used for communication, navigation, and weather forecasting.
Maths
Year 7
This week we completed our unit on developing geometric reasoning and began our unit on developing number sense. There are only two more units to go until we have completed the Year 7 maths curriculum.
Year 8
Line Symmetry & Reflection
- Sum.3.5 – Reflect a shape in a diagonal line 2 (shapes not touching the line)
Students completed their Line Symmetry & Reflection Assessment and they did very well.
Students begin learning about The Data Handling Cycle:
- Sum.4.1 – Set up a statistical enquiry
- Sum.4.2 – Design and criticise questionnaires
- Sum.4.3 – Draw and interpret pictograms, bar charts and vertical line charts
- Sum.4.4 – Draw and interpret multiple bar charts
- Year 9
Students completed their assessment on Rates on Monday and they did very well. This week, students begin learning about Probability: - Sum.4.1 – Single event probability (R)
- Sum.4.2 – Relative frequency, including convergence
