As we celebrate Lunar New Year, we extend our warmest wishes to all members of the UHIS community. Seollal is a special time and an opportunity to reflect on the values of family, respect, gratitude and new beginnings.

The Year of the Horse reminds us of energy, determination and positivity as we look ahead to the months to come. May the year bring good health, happiness and success to all our students, families and staff.

Lunar New Year Celebrations

Thank you to all the parents who joined us for our Lunar New Year celebrations this week. It was wonderful to see our community come together to mark this important occasion.

Students learned more about the significance of Seollal in Korea, including the importance of family, respect and new beginnings. The dakkji competition was especially exciting, with great enthusiasm, determination and excellent sportsmanship on display.

We are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate together and to continue strengthening the sense of community that makes UHIS so special.

School Consultative Group Meeting

The School Consultative Group met on Thursday 5 February. The meeting provided a valuable opportunity for school leadership and parent representatives to discuss key areas, including the upcoming Council of International Schools (CIS) accreditation cycle, the school’s financial position and budget planning, staffing for 2026/27, tuition fees, academic support, extracurricular provision and school facilities. Leadership shared updates on the CIS re-accreditation process, confirmed staffing plans for next year, and outlined steps being taken to strengthen enrolment and maintain financial stability.

Parent representatives raised thoughtful questions and suggestions on behalf of the wider community, including academic support in core subjects, extracurricular opportunities, event programming and playground facilities. The discussion was constructive and forward-looking, with agreed actions including a parent survey regarding extracurricular activities and further review of event programming. We thank our parent representatives for their engagement and contribution. Full minutes of the meeting are included below, and a summary will also be shared with the wider community.

Introducing MAP Growth Assessments

Beginning in Term 3, UHIS students will take part in MAP Growth assessments in Reading and Mathematics. MAP Growth, developed by NWEA, is an internationally recognised assessment used by schools worldwide to measure academic progress over time.

MAP Growth is an adaptive assessment, meaning the questions adjust according to each student’s responses. This provides accurate information about individual achievement levels and areas for development. The assessments are not graded and are not used in isolation; rather, they support teachers in planning, differentiation and the careful monitoring of student progress.

MAP Growth assessments will be administered twice each academic year, aligned with our existing reporting schedule. Parents will receive their child’s MAP Growth report alongside the mid-year report in Term 2 and the end-of-year report in Term 3, together with guidance to help interpret the results and understand what they mean for continued learning.

The introduction of MAP Growth forms part of our ongoing commitment to continuous school improvement. By using reliable, internationally benchmarked assessment data, we strengthen teaching and learning across the school. This initiative also reflects our commitment to keeping parents well informed and ensuring that UHIS continues to align with recognised international school best practice.

Further details about MAP assessments will be provided closer to the assessment time.
