Parent-Teacher Conferences

Thank you to all parents who attended parent–teacher conferences this week. These meetings are an important opportunity to share information, celebrate progress and work together to support each child’s learning and well-being.

We value open communication and strong home–school partnerships at UHIS. If you were unable to attend a conference, or if you would like to meet with your child’s teacher at another time, please do not hesitate to contact the Admin Office or your child’s teacher to arrange a meeting. We are always happy to support our families.

School Consultative Group Meeting

The School Consultative Group met on Thursday, and the meeting was both positive and productive. School leadership and parent representatives shared ideas, discussed key aspects of school life and listened carefully to parent perspectives.

We would like to thank our parent representatives for the important role they fulfil, supporting communication and partnership between families and the school. Their time, commitment and thoughtful contributions are greatly valued. Minutes and a summary of the meeting will be shared in next week’s newsletter.

Lunar New Year Celebrations

UHIS will celebrate Lunar New Year on Wednesday 11 February (next week) at 1.45pm, and parents are warmly invited to attend.

Lunar New Year, known as Seollal in Korea, is one of the most important traditional celebrations of the year. It is a time for families to come together, show respect to elders, and welcome the new year with hopes for good fortune and health. This year, we will be welcoming the Year of the Horse, which is traditionally associated with energy, effort and positivity.

Our celebration will include sebae bows, a dakkji competition, the announcement of the kite-decoration competition results, and traditional Korean refreshments. We look forward to sharing this meaningful cultural experience with our students and families and celebrating together as a community.

Hanboks and Traditional Dress

Students are invited to wear a hanbok or traditional dress from their home country on Wednesday as part of our Lunar New Year celebrations. Participation is entirely optional, and families are not expected to purchase anything specially for the day.

Some students may choose to bring a hanbok to school and change at lunchtime. The school will take a great photograph of students who come to school in traditional dress to celebrate the diversity of our community.

Kite Decorating Contest

Dakkji Competition

A dakkji championship will be held as part of our Lunar New Year celebrations. Students have been invited to volunteer to take part, and we are looking forward to a fun and spirited event that also provides opportunities to learn about good sportsmanship, including winning and losing graciously.
Students may make their own dakkji at home to use in the championship, or they may choose to use dakkji that have been made at school.

Open Day

UHIS will be holding an open day for prospective families on Tuesday 24th February.

If you know anyone who would be interested in attending, please put them in contact with the Admin Office

Mid-year reports will be sent home on Friday 30 January. These reports provide an important opportunity to reflect on your child’s progress and learning so far this year.

Parent–teacher conferences will take place in Weeks 5 and 6, and parents are reminded to ensure they make an appointment with their child’s teacher. UHIS values open communication and strong home-school partnerships, and these conversations play an important role in supporting student learning and well-being. We look forward to working together to help every child continue to thrive.

Health and Well-being Reminder

We have had a number of unwell students in school this week, and a seasonal illness is currently circulating within our community. To help keep everyone safe and well, we kindly ask parents to keep children at home if they are feeling unwell, particularly if they have a fever or other contagious symptoms.

Keeping sick students at home helps protect other children and staff and supports a healthier school environment for all. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in caring for the well-being of our whole UHIS community.

We will still be here when you get better!

Playground Update – Football Pitch Rota

To help ensure playtimes are safe, inclusive and enjoyable for all students, we have introduced a rota system for use of the football pitch. On some days the pitch will be closed to football, on some days it will be available for small games only, and on other days it will be open for full matches.

Students are reminded to check and follow the rota and to choose playtime activities thoughtfully. We have been pleased to see playtimes this week filled with a wide range of activities, with students playing in new ways and enjoying time with different friends. This positive approach helps make break times enjoyable for everyone.

School Consultative Group

The School Consultative Group will meet in Term 2 on Thursday 5 February. This group meets once per term to discuss matters related to school life, community feedback and ongoing school improvement. It provides an important forum for open dialogue between parents and school leadership, helping to strengthen communication and partnership across our community.

We have received a number of items for discussion from the school community, and they have been added to our agenda.

The results of the meeting will be published in next week’s newsletter

Lunar New Year Celebrations

UHIS will hold a Lunar New Year celebration on Wednesday, 11 February, and we warmly invite parents to join us for this special occasion. Students will enjoy a range of activities celebrating this vibrant cultural festival and exploring traditions observed across many parts of the world. We look forward to welcoming families to share in the celebrations, and further details will be shared shortly.

CIS Accreditation

UHIS will shortly begin a new Council of International Schools (CIS) accreditation cycle, with a preliminary engagement scheduled for May. The school is currently fully accredited, and this next phase forms part of our ongoing commitment to continuous school improvement.

CIS accreditation is an internationally recognised process that supports schools in reviewing and strengthening key areas such as teaching and learning, student well-being, safeguarding, leadership and governance. Rather than a one-time inspection, accreditation is a cyclical process focused on reflection, evidence and growth over time. As we move into this next cycle, UHIS looks forward to engaging staff, students and parents in meaningful ways that support the continued development of our school.

Ulsan Hyundai International School

During the winter holiday, we completed the final steps in the process of officially becoming Ulsan Hyundai International School. While our name has changed, our identity, values, and commitment to providing a high-quality international education remain firmly the same. This milestone reflects our school’s proud history, strong connection to the Hyundai community, and our continued focus on serving students and families in Ulsan with an internationally minded outlook.

Soon, a new set of IPC units will begin. This time, students across different year groups will be studying light and sound at age-appropriate levels. Exploring shared themes at the same time allows us to connect learning across the school and celebrate our learning together.

Ulsan Children’s Home Gifts

During the winter holiday, Santa delivered the gifts generously donated by the UHIS community to the children at the Ulsan Children’s Home. Bringing Christmas cheer to the Children’s Home has become a well-established UHIS tradition, and we are delighted to have continued this meaningful act of kindness once again this year. Thank you to everyone who purchased a gift; your generosity brought smiles and happiness to many children, and we look forward to sharing even more festive cheer next year.

Library Volunteer

We are looking for a parent volunteer to support our small but much-loved UHIS library. The role involves helping with book organisation, simple cataloguing and keeping the space welcoming for our students.

A regular weekly slot would be ideal, but we are happy to work around your availability. No prior experience is required, just a love of books and a willingness to help our young readers.

If you are interested, please contact the Admin Office.

Thank you for supporting our learning community.

New IPC/IMYC Units

Here is a sneak peek at the exciting IPC and IMYC units beginning this term. Students across the school will be exploring a range of engaging topics, with a strong focus on hands-on investigation and inquiry-based learning. There is plenty of interesting science to discover as students ask questions, test ideas, and make meaningful connections to the world around them.

Important School Update: Our New Name

We are pleased to share an important and positive development in our school’s journey.

During the winter holidays we will complete the process of officially becoming Ulsan Hyundai International School. This name change reflects who we are today and the education we provide: a high-quality, internationally accredited school with a strong global outlook, firmly rooted in Ulsan and proudly connected to HD Hyundai.

The inclusion of International in our name more accurately represents our curriculum, values and learning approach, while Ulsan highlights our role as the city’s only international school and our commitment to serving the wider community. Retaining Hyundai honours the long-standing partnership that has been central to our history and growth since the school was founded in 1982. More information about the name change can be found on our website.

Importantly, while our name is changing, what matters most remains the same. Our day-to-day operations, legal status, admissions regulations, curriculum, staff, and, most importantly, our commitment to student wellbeing, safeguarding, and high-quality teaching remain unchanged.

We would like to thank our current families, alumni, former parents and partners for their continued trust and support. This rebranding marks a new chapter, but it is built firmly on the values that have always defined our school: nurturing confident, compassionate and globally minded learners.

We look forward to moving ahead together as Ulsan Hyundai International School.

Practical information during the transition

As we move to Ulsan Hyundai International School, there are a few practical updates we would like families to be aware of:

  • Our school website has moved to a new address: www.uhis.or.kr. The previous website address will continue to redirect visitors to the new site.
  • All staff email addresses have transitioned to our new domain and now end in @uhis.or.kr. Existing email addresses will continue to work during the transition period.
  • School signage will be updated over the holidays.
  • Our social media accounts have been renamed to reflect our new identity. If you already follow us, existing links should continue to work as normal.
  • All other school contact details remain unchanged.

If you have any questions, please contact the Admin Office.

As with any rebranding, it is possible that the old school name may still appear in some places initially. We appreciate your understanding as we work through these updates and ensure everything is aligned over time.

Thank you for your patience and continued support as we move forward together.

.

Here is a message from our Board of Governors:

.

Welcome to Ulsan Hyundai International School!
To better reflect our role as the only licensed institution of international education in Ulsan and our close ties to HD Hyundai, our founder, we are proud to announce our new name: Ulsan Hyundai International School.
Formerly known as “Hyundai Foreign School”, this rebranding marks an exciting new chapter in our journey that first started in Ulsan in 1982. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our current school community, alumni, and former parents for their kind support and encouragement. Please rest assured that we will continue to carry forward our vision of nurturing global citizens with a love of knowledge, tolerance, and compassion.
Our world today faces rapid technological change, global climate challenges, and unprecedented geopolitical and economic shifts. These realities call for new ways of thinking and preparing our students to thrive.
In response, we are committed to boosting creativity and resilience while promoting critical thinking through our educational programmes. Our goal is to equip students with the skills and a flexible, international mindset needed to navigate the complexities of the 21st century with confidence.
True to the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child,” we believe education is a shared responsibility. We warmly invite all members of our community to join us in this worthy endeavour and would appreciate your continued support.
Thank you.
Ulsan Hyundai International School Board

Winter Show

The Winter Show is this Wednesday!

Our students have been hard at work preparing some amazing performances for us all to enjoy and we are looking forward to seeing as many parents and members of the UHIS community as possible come together to share in some winter cheers.

  • The performance starts at 2pm, and we ask that you be seated and ready for the show to start at this time.
  • After the show there should be time for some hot chocolate and light refreshments served in the lobby area. This is also a chance for our community to spend some time together before the holidays.

Holiday Homework

Please remember that it is our policy to not set homework during the holidays. We believe our students need a well-earned break and that they will learn better if they come back refreshed in term 2.

Early Years Enrolment Interest for 2026

Do you have siblings or friends who may wish to join our Early Years programme? To open an Early Years class in 2026, we require a minimum number of interested families. If you know a child who would like to enrol (aged 3 and above), please let us know during December.
The results of this December interest survey will determine whether the Early Years Class (EYC) will open for the 2026/27 school year, beginning in August 2026.

Digital Citizenship

From Term 2, all classes will begin using Common Sense Education’s digital citizenship curriculum. These trusted resources help children learn how to stay safe, think critically and act kindly online which is an important part of our safeguarding work and our commitment to developing responsible global citizens.

Students will explore topics such as protecting personal information, recognising reliable sources and showing respect in digital spaces.
