Ms. Murray’s Class Update Term 1 Week 8

Hello everyone!

It’s been an exciting week of Halloween preparations and learning this week. There are English and Maths assessments on the horizon as we come to the end of the half-term, so students have been busy preparing for these as well.

English

In English, students finished reading Animal Farm, exploring the tragic fate of Boxer, the pigs’ increasingly human behaviour, and their continued disregard for the farm’s original rules. They also considered the concept of a cyclical narrative, examining how the ending reflects the beginning of the novella and what this reveals about the nature of power and revolution.

Students have also been preparing for their upcoming assessment, which will occur on Tuesday 20th October.

The assessment will focus on the question: “How does George Orwell use the character of Napoleon to explore the theme of power and corruption in Animal Farm?” They have been developing their analytical skills, selecting relevant quotations and considering how Orwell uses Napoleon’s character to communicate his ideas about leadership and the abuse of power.

They also practiced their writing skills in our English Workshop class, putting their knowledge of rhetoric to the test to write a speech.

Ms. Murray’s Class Update Term 1 Week 6

Hello everyone!

It’s been a week of knowledge recall, new concepts, and creative planning. Students have covered a lot of ground and are looking forward to the long weekend! Let’s see what they got up to!

English

In English, students continued their investigation of Animal Farm by exploring the historical context of Stalin’s purges in the USSR. They read Chapter 7 and considered how Napoleon’s increasingly violent purges on the farm reflect Stalin’s actions, as well as what this might suggest about the future of the animals. Students made predictions about what could happen next and examined quotations from Stalin, considering how they reflect the tyranny and manipulation of violent leaders both in the real world and within Orwell’s fictional society. They also completed a linking and thinking activity, taking two different concepts or characters within the novel and finding the link between them using critical thinking.

In Grammar, students focused on academic verbs and how they can strengthen analytical writing. They explored verbs used to interpret, develop, compare, and exemplify, considering how more precise academic vocabulary can help them communicate their ideas more effectively in essays. Students have been given a worksheet on these verbs to complete for homework.

IMYC

In Science, students began their exploration of reproduction by considering the “miracle of birth”. They started by sharing what they already knew and collaboratively generated questions about what they wanted to discover. They considered inheritance and tallied characteristics within the class, creating bar charts to showcase the most common. Students then explored how sperm and egg cells are formed, the importance of each cell, and their roles in reproduction. Through research, they were able to uncover the most important functions of reproduction. They also investigated the challenging journey sperm cells undertake in order to reach an egg, developing their understanding of the processes involved in conception.

In Humanities, students explored the question: “What is left behind after a celebration?” They investigated the different types of pollution that can result from both large-scale and everyday celebrations, considering how waste and other environmental impacts can vary depending on the event. Students then categorised different objects and materials associated with celebrations according to the types of pollution they can contribute to, beginning to consider how our celebrations can have lasting effects on the environment.

PE

In PE, students worked collaboratively to develop their balance and coordination, using poles and hoops to move while keeping their equipment balanced together. This challenged students to communicate, cooperate and adjust their movements to work effectively as a team.

Students also began learning the basic rules and skills of Ultimate Frisbee. They practised throwing and catching with their teammates before putting their skills into action through small-sided 3v3 games, developing their movement, communication and teamwork along the way.

Ms. Murray’s Class Update Term 1 Week 5

Hello everyone!

This week’s class update is short and sweet. But, we have packed a lot into just three days and students have been working incredibly hard.

The class is in need of a long weekend break for Chuseok and I wish you all a lovely, restful holiday time.

English

In English, students continued their study of Animal Farm by analysing Napoleon’s speech following the destruction of the windmill in Chapter 6. Students learned the meaning of the term “scapegoat” and applied this new vocabulary accurately when discussing how Napoleon shifts blame and manipulates the other animals.

Students also developed their independent analytical skills, closely examining a quotation and “zooming in” on individual words to identify their connotations and consider why Orwell may have chosen them. They then put these skills into practice by writing extended analytical paragraphs on a quotation of their choice, using detailed textual evidence to explain the writer’s choices and their effects.

IMYC

In Humanities, students continued their exploration of the Cold War by investigating why the Berlin Wall was built. They explored the division of Germany following the Second World War and considered why the East German government became increasingly concerned about the open border and the number of people leaving East Germany.

Students then investigated how and why the Berlin Wall eventually fell, creating a timeline of events, and considering the cause-and-effect relationships that led to its collapse and the fall becoming a point of global celebration. Building on their previous learning about Cold War propaganda, students also put themselves in the role of communist propagandists, designing their own propaganda posters to communicate the ideas and messages they’d identified in previous propaganda posters.

PE

In PE, students refined their field hockey skills, learning how to run with the stick and the ball, as well as playing two 5-a-side matches.

Ms. Murray’s Class Update Term 1 Week 4

Hello everyone!

It’s been a fun and exciting week four! We have had a lovely week celebrating an early Chuseok at UHIS. You can find photos from the day at the end!

English

In English, students completed Chapter 5 and 6 of Animal Farm. Within these chapters, students investigated the allegorical connections between real-life figures and the characters within the book. By researching the historical context attached to Animal Farm and applying this information on the Russian Revolution and Stalinism to their analysis of the novel, students are thinking more deeply and analytically about the themes of totalitarianism, inequality, and oppression. Students have also furthered their understanding of propaganda and considered how the art of rhetoric can be a powerful tool when wielded by powerful people.

In their Friday workshop, students implemented the classic five-step story arc and created their own short story through the medium of a comic.

Aut.2.9 – Compound interest

They also completed their end-of-unit assessment. I will give the test papers back on Tuesday for review and feedback.

IMYC

In Humanities, students explored how the meaning of celebrations can differ between people and societies, and how governments can use celebrations and commemorations as a form of propaganda. Building on their learning from Animal Farm, students examined posters from the USSR, considering what events, people and ideas were chosen to be celebrated, and why. They also began exploring the Berlin Wall through roleplay, where we divided the class into East and West, and provided different rules to each side. This has laid the foundations for next week’s investigation into its fall and why its collapse was so widely celebrated.

In Science, students continued their exploration of genetics by investigating DNA and its role in living organisms. They explored the molecular makeup of the four DNA bases — A, G, C and T — and learned how these work together to form genetic information. Students then created their own DNA models, applying the principles they had learned to represent the structure of DNA in a hands-on way.

PE

In PE, students participated in a full game of kickball and challenged themselves to remember the rules from last week. We also introduced them to netball, where they learned how to chest pass, and catch balls while in motion, without moving with them. Next week, we will work on footwork and positions.

Chuseok Celebrations

Students have been practicing their dancing for weeks in music in the lead up for Chuseok, and finally they got to show friends and family! They also got to try a range of traditional Korean games, and ate some delicious treats!

Ms. Murray’s Class Update Term 1 Week 3

Hello everyone!

We’re already onto our third week and it’s been a busy week of MAPS testing. Students completed two assessments: English & Maths. The purpose of these tests is to track students’ progress throughout the year and we’ll be using the data to identify areas of focus for each student.

There’s also been a lot of preparation for Chuseok, which we’re excited to celebrate here at UHIS next Wednesday.

English

In English, students continued their study of Animal Farm, exploring the Seven Commandments and their links to the Christian Ten Commandments, as well as considering how the pigs gradually use and abuse their power to gain greater control over the other animals. Students also examined how the neighbouring farms react to the animals’ uprising and what this reveals about the wider political situation in the novel. Alongside their analysis, students have begun considering the essay question: ‘The animals are right to defend the farm by whatever means necessary.’ To what extent do you agree?, using evidence from the text to develop and support their own arguments. They will be attempting an independent response to this question as homework.

In their Friday workshop, students recalled the classic five-step story arc: Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution. And planned their own comic encapsulating these five steps.

📌 Reminder: Students will have a Percentages test next Friday 18th September.

IMYC

In History, students worked in groups to investigate the origins and development of four important days of celebration and commemoration: Indian Independence Day, Juneteenth, Remembrance Day, and Bastille Day. Using both primary and secondary sources, they explored how these days originated, how they have changed over time, and what they look like today. Students then presented their findings through posters, before making their own judgements about why these celebrations and commemorations should continue to be recognised.

In Science, students explored animal cells, learning to identify and label their different parts and understand the important roles each part plays within the body. To bring their learning to life, students created their own clay models of animal cells, giving them a hands-on opportunity to explore the structure and function of the different cell components.

PE

This week, students got to test out their skills in table tennis. They got into pairs and challenged other pairs to a game, and then were involved in a singles competition within their larger group. They also learned the rules to kickball, and how we can work together in full game settings.

Ms. Murray’s Class Update Term 1 Week 2

Hello everyone! It’s been a great week of settling into routines, welcoming more new students, and our class are really giving it their all!

Next week, after school activities are beginning. We’re excited for our students to gain skills beyond the classroom!

English

In English, students have been introduced to Aristotle’s Art of Rhetoric and considered how Orwell used its teachings of Logos, Pathos, and Ethos in Old Major’s speech. They also considered the use of persuasive language methods and how these impact the reader and audience.

Diving further into the speech, students investigated key quotations from Old Major and zoomed in on the word and language choices, considering the connotations surrounding their usage and how these impact the reading of the novel. Students also explored the essay question: How does Old Major use rhetoric to turn the animals of Manor Farm against man? They produced an analytical paragraph in response.

For their Friday English Workshop, students discussed the books they have been reading over the last two weeks. They also looked into the differences between a novel and a graphic novel, investigating how images are used to tell stories.

IMYC

This week, students continued exploring our IMYC unit through the science of light. They investigated how light behaves, including how prisms can change the path of light, and explored the key concepts of reflection, refraction, and light waves. Through practical activities, students were able to see these ideas in action and develop a deeper understanding of how we experience and interact with light.

Students also put their baking skills to the test once again! Following their vote on the best recipe from our previous experiment, they repeated the challenge alongside Mr Browning’s class, this time using their baking to teach the five senses to the younger students. Students considered how sight, smell, taste, touch, and even sound can influence our experience of food, while developing their practical skills and working collaboratively with another class.

In Humanities, students explored why certain moments in history become important enough for societies to remember and celebrate. They considered a range of key historical events, including wars ending, countries gaining independence, revolutions, scientific discoveries and changes to laws, and discussed what makes an event historically significant. Students examined significance through impact, change, memory, relevance and duration, considering not only what happened at the time but also why an event may continue to matter many years later. They also worked with primary sources and contemporary accounts to investigate how an event was understood by people at the time, before considering how its significance and the way it is remembered may have changed over time.

PE

In PE, students were introduced to the concept of dance as a collaborative skill. After a warm-up dancing to songs students were already familiar with, they ventured into the world of American line dancing.

Ms. Murray’s Class Update Term 1 Week 1

  • We also learned how to find the Highest Common Factor (HCF) and Lowest Common Multiple (LCM).
  • Students worked through a range of problems to strengthen their understanding and problem-solving skills.
  • Please encourage students to review their classwork and practise these skills at home

IMYC

This week, students were introduced to their new unit: Celebration. For their Entry Point, they were tasked with researching how different cultures marked various concepts (Love, Birth, Death, Coming of Age, Achievement) with particular celebrations. They then compared this with other celebrations throughout the world and across continents, focused on the same concept. Students worked in pairs to collect information, research the celebrations, and present their findings to the class.

In Humanities, students took this research further by investigating the reason behind specific historical events, considering why some history is still celebrated with important days today (e.g. Independence Day, Liberation Day, Remembrance Day). This helped students gain a broad understanding of historical events celebrated worldwide.

In Science, students considered the atomic and chemical make-up of a cake. Utilising their prior knowledge of atoms, elements, compounds and mixtures, students were able to investigate answer the question: What changes when we bake? This helped them consider which changes that occur during the baking process are physical and which are chemical.

We also began our cake baking experiment by looking at recipes with different ratios of ingredients. Students baked cakes while changing the amount of baking powder, eggs, and flour within a recipe to find out how this would alter the mixture. While waiting for the cakes to bake, they also initiated a side-quest to discover how to make buttercream and learned that a little food colouring can go a long way.

Next week, we will figure out what varied ingredients can do to the taste, texture, and colour of baked goods. And they’ll consume their creations!

PE

In PE, students started the week with circuits to practice a variety of skills, including volleyball, hockey, and juggling. They then moved onto the concept of moving together and coordination with others. Through traditional games, students have been developing their ability to move confidently, quickly and safely with others. A difficult skill to master!

Other Notes

The Termly Curriculum Plan for term one is now available. You can find information about what students will be doing in every subject, and what modules they will be covering throughout the term. This will be accessible from the website for the duration of the term.

Clubs will be starting in week three. The deadline to sign up is Wednesday 2nd September.
