UHIS Newsletter – T1W1 – 2026/27

A Busy First Week at UHIS!

What a great first week! It has been lovely to see some familiar faces returning to UHIS and to welcome new students and families to our community. The school has been full of energy, conversations and happy reunions as everyone has settled back into school life. It has been especially nice to see students reconnecting with friends and getting to know new classmates.

During the week, students and staff have been establishing routines and getting used to the rhythm of the school day. Classrooms are busy, learning is already in full swing and students have made a positive start across the school. We are proud of the way students have approached the first week and grateful for the support of families as we begin the year together.

There is lots of important information in this newsletter to help the term continue smoothly. Please take a few minutes to read the updates, note the upcoming dates and check the reminders for Week 2. We are looking forward to another busy and exciting week at UHIS.

Class Information Meetings

Class Information Meetings will take place in Week 2 and are an important opportunity to begin the year together. Parents will meet their child’s teacher and hear about the curriculum and learning planned for the year. Teachers will explain class routines, arrangements and the practical information that helps each school day run smoothly. The meetings are also a lovely chance to meet the other parents in your child’s class and begin building connections. We strongly encourage as many parents as possible to attend, as these meetings will help everyone feel informed and part of the class community.

Fire Drill

We will hold a fire drill on Friday 4th September at 11:00 AM. This is standard practice at the beginning of the school year to make sure that all new staff and students understand the school’s safety procedures. Students will be informed in advance and staff will guide them through the process calmly and carefully. There is nothing to worry about, and the drill is an important way to help everyone feel confident about what to do in an emergency.

After-School Activities

After-School Activities are confirmed to start in Week 3, with a range of clubs and activities for students to enjoy. Please review the available activities and discuss the choices with your child. Sign up by Wednesday 2nd September (Week 2) using the registration link below. We look forward to seeing students getting involved, trying something new and enjoying time with friends after school.

Nova Lab

Nova Lab is a hands-on science and engineering activity led by university students from UNIST. Each week, students will take on an exciting new challenge, from building chemical volcanoes and testing insulation to designing bridges and planning a zombie-apocalypse survival strategy. The sessions bring real scientific thinking and practical experiments into the classroom, giving students the chance to explore, predict, test ideas, collect evidence and learn through doing. Students will work with materials, ask questions and develop their problem-solving, teamwork and communication skills. Every session is different, carefully prepared and connected to real scientific ideas and applications. Places are limited, so early sign-up is recommended. Please remember to sign up using the After-School Activities form.

Fee: 20,000 won per lesson

School Bus Updates and Code of Conduct

Please note that there have been slight changes to the school bus schedule. We kindly ask all families to check the updated information and review the School Bus Code of Conduct to help ensure safe and pleasant bus rides for everyone. Thank you for your cooperation in making our school commutes safe.

Parent Teacher Association

The PTA brings parents, teachers, students and administration together to make school life even better. It is a wonderful way to help organise enjoyable events for our students, support school activities and build a stronger, more connected community.

Whether you can help with planning, lend a hand at an event or simply share an idea, your involvement can make a real difference. Our first event will be the Halloween party, and we would love to have lots of parents involved.

Parents are warmly invited to the PTA Coffee Morning on Wednesday 2nd September at 10:00 AM. Please come along, meet other families and find out how you can get involved. We hope to see you there!

School Consultative Group Parent Representatives

We are inviting parents who would like to serve as representatives on the School Consultative Group this year. The group is an important link between the school and the parent community. It gives parents a formal opportunity to share views, ask questions and offer ideas, while helping the school communicate clearly and understand the experiences and priorities of families. Parent representatives play an important role in building a strong, open and positive school community.

The provisional date for the first meeting is Wednesday 21 October. If you are interested, or would like to find out more, please contact the Admin Office. If more than one parent comes forward, an election will be held.

Bottle Cap Collection

We are collecting clean plastic bottle caps for an upcoming school art project. If you have any at home, please send them in with your child and help us create something colourful and creative for UHIS. Every cap will make a difference!

Curriculum Focus

White Rose Maths

Maths teaching and learning at UHIS is based on the English National Curriculum, with White Rose Maths as the scheme we use to support high-quality teaching and learning. Students have a daily one-hour maths lesson first thing in the morning, taught in small groups so that teachers can provide a high level of support and differentiation. The work is organised into units, with an assessment at the end of each unit to help teachers check understanding and plan the next steps. Older students also complete end-of-term assessments, giving us a broader picture of their progress over time. This week, students will begin their work with White Rose Maths through carefully structured lessons, discussion and problem-solving.

Open Day

UHIS will be hosting an Open Day on Tuesday 6th October from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM. If you know a family who may be interested in an international education in Ulsan, please encourage them to come along and find out more about our school. It will be a lovely opportunity to meet our staff, see the school in action and learn more about life at UHIS. Please ask interested families to contact the Admin Office to register their interest.
