Autumn Arrives at UHIS
As the weather begins to cool, it has been lovely to see our students continuing to learn, play and grow together. Week 3 has brought great learning and memorable moments across the school, and there is much to look forward to in the weeks ahead. Thank you to our whole community for the energy and encouragement you bring each day.
Happening in Week 4
- Wednesday 16th September, 1:45 p.m – Chuseok Celebration
Chuseok Celebration
We will celebrate Chuseok, an important Korean holiday, on Wednesday 16 September from 1:45 to 3:15 p.m. Parents are warmly invited to join us in the 1F Lobby for an afternoon of performances, traditional snacks and community.
Programme for parents
- 1:45 p.m. Student assembly, followed by a welcome from Mr Green.
- 2:00 p.m. Student performances: Years 1–2 flower dance, Years 3–4 fan dance and Years 5–9 sogo dance.
- 2:15 p.m. A traditional Korean jango performance and a beona performance.
- 2:35 p.m. Traditional refreshments, including songpyeon and sikhye.
- 2:45 p.m. Students will enjoy traditional games in the hall.
- 3:15 p.m. Celebration finishes.
We look forward to celebrating this important Korean holiday together.
Hanbok and Traditional Dress
On Wednesday 16 September, students are warmly invited to come to school wearing hanbok or traditional dress from a country with which they identify. This is entirely optional.
UHIS has a long tradition of celebrating Korean holidays together. It is a chance to honour Korean culture and the many cultures represented within our school community.
Hornet Awareness
As part of our ongoing work to keep students safe, teachers have been talking with students about hornets and how to respond calmly if they see one. We have discussed Asian yellow-legged hornets (Vespa velutina), which are most common in late summer and may be attracted to sugary food and fruit.
Students have been reminded that not every flying insect is a hornet. If they see a hornet, they should walk away calmly and tell a teacher. We are also encouraging students not to cause unnecessary alarm and to put food waste in the bin. This calm, sensible approach helps to keep everyone safe.
A Day Out in the Park
We are looking forward to a whole-school day out at Ulsan Grand Park on Thursday 8th October (Week 7). Parents and members of our school community will be invited to join us for a picnic.
After lunch, each class will take part in an activity in the park. Further details, including arrangements for the day, will follow closer to the time.
44 Years of UHIS
This week, UHIS marked its 44th anniversary. Founded on 10 September 1982 as Hyundai Foreign School, our school has a long and proud history of international education in Ulsan.
For more than four decades, UHIS has brought together students, families, staff and alumni from around the world to learn, grow and build community.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of our journey—past and present. We are proud of our history and excited for the future together.
After-School Activities
After-School Activities began in Week 3. We hope students enjoy trying something new, developing their interests and spending time with friends after school.
Parents should check the bus schedule again, as transport arrangements may be different on activity days. Check which activities you have signed up for.
MAPS Tests
Students completed their MAPS Tests during Week 3 and approached them with a great attitude. These assessments helped us understand what students knew and what they were ready to learn next, giving teachers a useful picture to guide future planning and support.
Results were recorded for inclusion in students’ mid-year and end-of-year reports.
UHIS: A Common Sense Media Recognized School
UHIS is officially a Common Sense Media Recognized School. This recognition reflects our commitment to helping students become thoughtful, safe and responsible users of media and technology.
Using research-based Common Sense Media resources, students develop skills in digital citizenship, media and AI literacy, privacy, online kindness and digital well-being. These skills support how students research, create and make decisions in a changing digital world.

PTA and Parent Representatives
We have not yet received any volunteers to serve as Class PTA Parent Representatives. A healthy school needs a functioning PTA: it helps parents connect, strengthens school spirit and makes community events possible.
Without a functioning PTA, planned events such as the Halloween party will not be able to go ahead. The school will contact some parents directly next week, but we warmly encourage anyone who is able to volunteer to contact the Admin Office.
Please consider volunteering to help build a strong, connected UHIS community.
School Consultative Group Parent Representatives
We are still looking for parents who would like to serve as representatives on the School Consultative Group this year. So far, we have not had any volunteers.
This group plays a vital role in school governance and improvement. It is an important communication channel between the school and the parent community, giving parents a formal opportunity to share views, ask questions and offer ideas, while helping the school communicate clearly and understand the experiences and priorities of families.
We will approach some parents directly next week. However, if you would like to volunteer or find out more, please contact the Admin Office.
Bottle Cap Collection
Thank you to everyone who has helped us collect bottle caps for our art project. We did some maths and worked out that we need about 5,000 caps for the project we are working on.
We are currently about 9% of the way there, so please keep bringing them in. Remember: ice cream for everyone when we reach 100%—let’s keep collecting!
