Ms Staines’s Class – Art Update T1 W6

Our Year 3–4 students have been exploring the colours, patterns, and textures of autumn through a series of leaf-inspired Art activities.

We began by observing the changing colours of autumn leaves and looking at real autumn landscapes to understand how colours appear in nature. Students then used these observations as inspiration to create their own imaginative leaf designs, experimenting with warm autumn colours, shapes, and patterns. They brought their ideas together through collage, carefully arranging and layering coloured paper to create unique compositions.

For their second task, students explored tone and value through two different drawing and painting techniques. They divided their leaf designs into two sections, using pencil to create different tonal values through shading and pressure, while using paint and varying amounts of water to explore lighter and darker shades. This allowed them to compare how different materials can create depth, contrast, and visual interest.

Through these activities, students developed their understanding of colour, tone, composition, and mixed-media techniques, while learning how artists can observe and interpret the natural world in their own creative ways.
