Mr Dunn Class Update T1 W 13

Hello everyone, and Happy Friday!

Only two weeks to go until the holiday! Here are some highlights for the week.

Literacy

This week, students explored how Gothic stories use false endings and twist endings to shock the reader, studying examples from The Monkey’s Paw and The Woman in Black. They analysed how calm moments are used to lull the audience before the horror returns. Building on this, students then spent time planning their own Gothic horror stories for their upcoming writing assessment. They developed settings, heroes, villains, key plot moments, and possible twists, preparing to craft atmospheric and suspenseful narratives next lesson.

IMYC

In Science, we completed our clay models from last week, where students created simple molecule models to show the difference between elements, compounds, and mixtures. We then moved on to explore physical and chemical changes, learning how to spot when a new substance has formed.

In History, students presented their group projects on the Renaissance, Enlightenment and Industrial Revolution. Each group shared their key thinkers, inventions and creative ideas from their assigned period, explaining how these developments changed society.

Maths

Year 7

This week we started our new unit on solving problems with addition & subtraction.

We studied the following skills:

  • Properties of addition and subtraction
  • Mental strategies for addition and subtraction
  • Use formal methods for addition of integers
  • Use formal methods for addition of decimals
  • Use formal methods for subtraction of integers

Year 8

End of Term Assessment
The assessment has been completed, and students performed really well — great effort from everyone!

This week, we also focused on key skills from the new algebra unit:

  • Spr.1.1 – Form algebraic expressions
  • Spr.1.2 – Use directed numbers within algebraic contexts
  • Spr.1.3 – Multiply out a single bracket
  • Spr.1.4 – Factorise into a single bracket

Students are building confidence in manipulating algebraic expressions and applying their understanding to increasingly challenging problems.

Year 9

 Construction & Congruency

This week, students continued their work on constructions and congruency. They learned to:

  • Aut.5.11 – Construct triangles accurately from given information (R)
  • Aut.5.12 – Identify congruent figures
  • Aut.5.13 – Explore properties of congruent triangles
  • Aut.5.14 – Identify congruent triangles using geometric reasoning

The assessment for this unit is now complete.
Students will have their End of Term Assessment on Tuesday, with a mock test on Monday to help them prepare.

Please encourage students to revise well and practise their key skills.
