School Consultative Group Meeting

Our next School Consultative Group Meeting will take place on Tuesday 28h April. This group plays an important role in supporting communication between the school and our wider community, ensuring that different perspectives are heard and considered.

Parents are encouraged to share any suggested agenda items with their parent representatives in advance of the meeting. Following the meeting, a summary and minutes will be shared with the community.

  • Now open to a wider range of students, from Year 1 to Year 9
  • We have enough students signed-up for this activity to go ahead
  • Places are still available.
  • Sign-up closes on Monday 20th April

We are pleased to announce a new collaboration that will provide our students with the opportunity to learn from experts in the field.

Students will explore the fundamentals of drone flight, learn how drones work, and gain insight into real-world applications of this rapidly developing field. The programme also includes an introduction to drone coding, where students will use tablets to control and programme drones through block-based coding.

CRESTAR Drone Camp will be led by Mr Jaeho Kim, a specialist in Drone Engineering and a Category 1 Drone Pilot License holder, supported by a team of experienced instructors. This will ensure students receive expert guidance and personalised support throughout the session.

All necessary equipment will be provided, including tablets and drones, ensuring a high-quality and engaging learning experience for all participants. UHIS staff will also be present to supervise and support students throughout the session.

Spaces are limited, and we encourage families to sign up early.

Fire Drill

On Friday, we carried out a fire drill in collaboration with the local fire brigade.

Students practised evacuating the building calmly and safely, and also had the opportunity to tour the fire engine and learn more about the work of the firefighters.

The visit finished on a lighter note, with the fire engine even helping to clean the Principal’s car.

MAP Growth Assessments

As part of our ongoing work to strengthen assessment and provide clearer information for families, we will be introducing MAP Growth Assessments from this term.

Students will complete the MAP Growth Assessments on Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th May.

What is MAP Growth?

MAP Growth is an online assessment used by many international schools around the world. It helps us understand what each student knows and what they are ready to learn next.

The assessment is adaptive. This means the questions change depending on how a student answers. If a student answers correctly, the questions become more challenging. If they find something difficult, the questions become easier. This allows each child to work at a level that is appropriate for them.

Why we are using MAP Growth

MAP Growth gives us a clearer picture of each child’s progress over time, rather than a single test result.

It helps us to:

  • Track progress across the year
  • Identify strengths and areas for development
  • Plan lessons that meet each child’s needs
  • Provide clear and timely feedback to parents

Teachers receive detailed reports shortly after the assessment, allowing us to respond quickly and provide targeted support where it is needed.

Students will continue to take MAP Growth assessments as they progress through UHIS, enabling us to build a clear and consistent picture of their development over time.

How it fits with classroom learning

MAP Growth is one part of how we assess students.

Teachers will continue to use a wide range of everyday assessments in lessons, such as feedback, classwork, and end-of-unit tasks. These remain the most important way we understand how students are learning on a day-to-day basis.

MAP Growth adds a consistent and reliable measure that helps us track progress over time and compare this with students in other international schools.

Schools using MAP Growth

MAP Growth is widely used in international education, with over 2,300 international schools in more than 145 countries using the assessment.

In Korea, many international schools use MAP Growth, including:

  • International School of Busan
  • Busan Foreign School
  • Daegu International School
  • Chadwick International, Seoul
  • St. Johnsbury Academy, Jeju
  • North London Collegiate School, Jeju

What this means for your child

Students will complete MAP Growth assessments during the school year in a calm and supportive environment.

The assessment is designed to be student-friendly. Because it adapts to each child’s level, students are not expected to know all the answers. Instead, it helps us identify the right level of challenge for them.

The parent report generated from the MAP assessments will be shared alongside the end-of-year reports. Class teachers will also be available to discuss individual results during the Parent–Teacher Conferences.

If you have any questions about MAP Growth Assessments, please contact the Admin Office and we will arrange a meeting to discuss this further.
