Our Year 7–9 students have continued exploring Chuseok through Art. After creating a one-page Chuseok poster, they moved on to designing traditional Korean beoseon (socks).
Students first looked at the traditional shape and decorative patterns of beoseon and explored the meanings behind the motifs. They learned that the peony, or “Moran”, is traditionally associated with wealth, prosperity, and honour. They also explored the butterfly motif, which symbolises happiness and harmony. The combination of peonies and butterflies creates a beautiful and balanced traditional design, often associated with a happy and prosperous life.
Using these traditional symbols as inspiration, students designed their own pair of overlapping beoseon, carefully arranging peonies, butterflies, and decorative patterns. Through this activity, they were able to learn more about Korean cultural symbolism while expressing their own creativity through pattern, composition, and colour.
