Welcome back and happy new year to you all! I hope 2026 is a year filled with happiness, love and great times for you all.
It has been so lovely seeing the children again this week. We have all been a little tired but excited to be back learning. We have had lots of exciting lessons this week. Let’s take a look at what we have been doing.
In Maths, we started our new unit ‘Money’ and the children have really enjoyed using our class toy money to help them make pounds and pence. It can be a little tricky for students at first but they have done so welll. We made little purses and I challenged them to put the correct amount of money in each one 🙂 I have sent home some toy money to help the Year 2 students with their homework. You can return it along with the homework next Friday 🙂 Thank you.
Year 2 Objectives from this week:
Spr.1.1 – Count money – pence
Spr.1.2 – Count money – pounds (notes and coins)
Spr.1.3 – Count money – pounds and pence

In Literacy, we started our new book “The Dragon Machine” and it was very exciting to find that a dragon had flown into the school building and left the children a dragon egg!

The students were very pleased to find a small dragon inside! We used it to recap the use of expanded noun phrases by describing the egg, dragon and nest on small post-its for our working wall. We called the dragon ‘Daisy’ and will be taking good care of her over the next month. The students had a little pre-writing task so that I could check where they are currently and what we need to focus on this term. We wrote stories about dragons using some pictures as prompts.
Throughout the story, we will be working on the following:
Write sentences with different forms: statement, question, exclamation, command
• Use subordination (apply because, introduce when)
• Use present and past tenses correctly and consistently (some progressive)
• Use punctuation correctly – exclamation marks, question marks
• Use phrases from story language
• Create and describe characters
• Create and describe settings
• Use past tense consistently and correctly
• Write in 3rd person
• Sequence of events with beginning, middle and end

IPC
In IPC, we had THE best time. We started our Freeze It topic and explored the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. We carried out an experiment to investigate how long it takes for water to turn into ice and then back into water again. We recorded the temperatures at five-minute intervals and carefully observed the changes taking place. We also had lots of fun exploring the texture and appearance of the ice cubes using our senses, and we must admit, a few may have been taste-tested too! 😉

It was Rafay’s birthday today! Happy Birthday to Rafay! Thank you to his mummy for sending lovely gift bags for the children. They have been sent home today in their bags. Sofija’s mummy also sent some pancakes for us to share and we enjoyed them along with Rafay’s brownie cake!
I hope you all have a lovely weekend! How cute is this picture?!
