Mrs Sim - 2025/26

Mrs Sim’s Weekly Update – Term 3 Week 3

It’s been a busy and positive week in our Year 1/2 classroom, with lots of wonderful learning taking place!

In Maths, both year groups have been exploring fractions in practical and engaging ways. Year 1 students have been learning to make equal groups through sharing, as well as recognising and finding a half of shapes and quantities. Year 2 students have been building on this by finding the whole, exploring unit and non-unit fractions, recognising that a half is the same as two quarters, and learning about three-quarters. The children have really enjoyed using hands-on resources such as tuff trays, manipulatives, and even pizza cutting to bring their learning to life.

In Literacy, the children have been working hard on their spelling and grammar skills. Year 1 students have been practising adding suffixes where no change is needed to the root word (such as -ed, -ing, -er, -est). Year 2 students have been focusing on contractions and exploring how to add -er and -est to adjectives to create comparatives and superlatives, as well as using -iest endings where needed. They have also been learning how prefixes such as un- can change the meaning of words. The children wrote imaginative pieces about what it would be like to live with the wolf from our story, and practised rules for comparing adjectives. Today, they researched bears, wolves, and lynx, developing their note-taking skills in preparation for writing about these animals next week, there was a lot of excitement, especially about the lynx and its hunting skills!

In IPC, the children have been having great fun exploring our unit on light. They created their own shadow puppets, designing a range of imaginative characters and shapes, and even performed with them in the Korean room! We have also been learning about how plants need sunlight and warmth to grow. The children set up an experiment by placing one plant pot in the sun and another in a dark box, and they are eagerly waiting to see the results. In addition, we spent time outdoors helping Mr Choi in the garden to plant the school’s vegetables. The children thoroughly enjoyed being outside and connecting with nature.

It has been a fun and productive week. Well done to all the children for their enthusiasm and hard work!

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Take care,

Mrs Sim
