Ms Temple’s Weekly Update – Term 3 Week 6

Hello everyone!

I can’t believe we are half way through Term 3! Time really does fly when you’re having fun.

Here is what we have been up to this week:

Maths

Year 5

Decimals
MAPS Maths Test
Sum.3.5 – Subtract decimals with the same number of decimal places
Sum.3.6 – Add decimals with different numbers of decimal places
Sum.3.7 – Subtract decimals with different numbers of decimal places
Sum.3.8 – Efficient strategies for adding and subtracting decimals

Year 6

As Year 6 students in the UK would normally now be revising for their SATs tests, the Year 6 students have completed all of the work required of them for this year. I have prepared individual study packs to help them revise for their End of Term assessments. These packs will allow them to recap and consolidate everything they have learned so far, helping to strengthen their confidence and prepare them for Year 7 Maths next year.

Weeks 5&6 – Terms 1&2 Review

Aut.1 – Place Value
Aut.2 – Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
Aut.3 – Fractions A
Aut.4 – Fractions B
Aut.5  – Converting units

Literacy

This week, the children began by completing their English MAP assessment. They worked carefully and showed good focus throughout.

After this, we returned to our class text and read Chapter 9 together. We discussed the key events in the chapter, how the characters are developing, and how the story is building towards the invention of the hot air balloon. The children were encouraged to think carefully about the choices made by the characters and how these might influence what happens next.

Later in the week, the children began planning their final piece of writing for this unit. Next Tuesday, they will write a future chapter in which the Montgolfier family’s prototype has finally flown and is now officially known as a hot air balloon. Their task is to create an exciting new adventure for Magpie and her crew, while also including the key writing features we have learned throughout the unit. These include ambitious vocabulary, effective sentence openers, dialogue, description, and carefully chosen punctuation.

I am really looking forward to reading their finished stories and seeing how they bring their adventures to life.

IPC

For our IPC Exit Point, the children completed their model of the solar system. Each pair chose a planet to research, gathered key facts, and recorded information about areas such as temperature, distance from the Sun, what the planet is made of, and whether humans could live there.

They also painted their planet models carefully, thinking about colour, size, and appearance. Next week, these will be hung up in our classroom to create our own solar system display. This has been a lovely way to bring our Space Scientists unit to a close, and it has been wonderful to see how much curiosity and enthusiasm the children have shown while learning about the universe.
