Ms Temple’s Weekly Update – Term 3 Week 10

Hello everyone!

I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful summer weather. It is hard to believe that we only have two weeks of term remaining. The year has flown by and there are still lots of exciting activities and celebrations ahead before the summer break.

Here is what Year 5/6 have been up to:

Maths

Year 5

Negative Numbers & Converting Units
Negative Numbers – End of unit assessment
Sum.5.1 – Kilograms and kilometres
Sum.5.2 – Millimetres and millilitres
Sum.5.3 – Convert units of length
Sum.5.4 – Convert between metric and imperial units
Sum.5.5 – Convert units of time

Year 6 have now completed all of their revision work and end of year assessments. They have worked incredibly hard throughout the year and should be very proud of all they have achieved. Their commitment, perseverance, and progress have been fantastic to see. Over the coming weeks, they will begin preparing for Year 7 Mathematics, helping to ensure a smooth and confident transition to middle school.

Literacy

In Literacy this week, the students took part in a Climate Change Dragon’s Den challenge. Working in groups, they were each assigned a different environmental issue, including plastic pollution, greenhouse gas emissions from transport, fossil fuel use and deforestation. The children began by researching their problem to understand its causes and impact on the planet. They then used their findings to design an invention, product or idea that could help solve the issue. Finally, each group prepared a presentation and delivered a sales pitch explaining how their invention worked, why it would be effective and why people would want to use it. This activity encouraged creativity, teamwork, research skills and persuasive speaking while helping students think critically about real world environmental challenges.

IPC

In IPC this week, the students learned about six influential figures who have dedicated their lives to protecting the environment and tackling climate change: Al Gore, Greta Thunberg, David Attenborough, Jane Goodall, Boyan Slat and Wangari Maathai. Working in groups, the students researched one of these individuals to discover who they are, the environmental challenges they sought to address and the actions they took to make a positive difference. They then created informative posters to showcase their findings before presenting their work to the class. This project helped develop the students’ research, communication and presentation skills while highlighting the impact that determined individuals can have on the world.
